AWARE Dispute

SINGAPORE: While both camps prepare for what some might term "a showdown" at the Association of Women for Action and Research's (AWARE) extraordinary general meeting, they are advising supporters to stay calm and respect others.

Auxiliary police have been hired for security measures, said AWARE spokeswoman and executive committee member Lois Ng, who advised members who feel unwell not to turn up, in light of the Influenza A situation.

While the latest figures on AWARE's membership were not available at press time, previous reports placed it at about 1,800. The exhibition hall at Suntec Singapore can accommodate 2,200 people.

"The main issue in the EGM is to debate and vote on the proposed constitutional amendments raised by the previous exco," said Ms Ng. "Members will also get a chance to cast a vote of confidence for the new exco."

For the Old Guard, the agenda is "clear and simple", said founding member Margaret Thomas.

It is to discuss and put to members "a vote of no-confidence in the new executive committee", and if the vote prevails, to dissolve the exco and hold another election.
